Who could benefit from this course?

  • Anyone interested in creating their own work
  • Performers wishing to create a monologue, one-person show, stand up act or performance poetry act
  • Artists wanting an opportunity to showcase themselves and their work to an invited audience   
  • Performers wishing to create solo improvised theatre, theatrical memoir or storytelling, or forum theatre work
  • Performers wishing to create narrative based visual or devised theatre   

How does it work?
A group of no more than 6 performers will work on...

  • Writing & re-drafting material (or sourcing a writer / script).
  • Finding editors & sounding boards ( or adapting a script).
  • Performance skills & techniques.
  • Test your material in a small group of supportive peers
  • Working with a Director.
  • Technical & Backstage considerations.
  • Booking venues, (inc. Register with “The Fringe”)
  • Publicity, including dealing with Press, Media & Social Media, & the Web.
  • Arranging ticketing, & front of house.
  • The Premiere
  • Collecting & Using feedback.


What do you gain?
The course will culminate in a scratch performance of your work in front of an invited audience at The Cockpit Theatre

Jonathan Brown (Artistic director of Something Underground Theatre Company) has been performing since 2000, writing and performing one-person shows since 2006, and writing, performing & directing plays for casts since 2011, receiving 5 & 4 Star reviews, and awards including...

  •     Best Male Performer Winner (Brighton Fringe 2013),
  •     Winner Best New Play Award (Brighton Fringe 2012)
  •     Jonathan’s one woman show Smoking Ban won the performer Kate Goodfellow Best Female performer award, Brighton Fringe 2014, and the show was longlisted for an Amnesty International Award
  •     His one woman show, Betsy Wisdom of a Brighton Whore achieved many 5 star reviews, and in 2013 its performer, Rachel Guershon, was nominated Best Female Performer Brighton Fringe.

These classes and workshops are designed to give the practical support and skills needed by performers new to, or looking to break into, the industry. Also aimed at actors already working but wanting to gain the experience and confidence to break into a new area of performance.
Our tutors are all working actors and directors with many years of experience in TV, Film and Theatre. Together they provide a storehouse of knowledge and techniques, helping new actors gain the tools and self assurance they need to gain work in the profession. Many classes have small numbers of students, enabling personal tuition and feedback. Teaching is tailored to the groups and students receive personal attention enabling them to grow as performers.
